Weather today: Dense fog engulfs Delhi-NCR as AQI jumps to ‘severe’ level; IMD issues alert for UP, Himachal

Delhi-NCR witnessed poor visibility early Monday morning and late on Sunday night as a heavy layer of fog spread across the region. Multiple videos emerged from various parts of the National Capital where vehicles were seen moving slowly through thick, polluted smog. According to the CPCB’s Sameer App, the air quality in Delhi jumped to 390 bringing the AQI level to ‘severe’ category.

States expected to be affected include Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh and West Uttar Pradesh till December 31, while East Uttar Pradesh may see dense fog conditions till January 1.

“Dense to very dense fog is likely during night & morning hours across Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana–Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh (till 31 Dec) and East Uttar Pradesh (till 1 Jan),” IMD said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Foggy conditions expected across eastern and northeastern states

The IMD further said dense fog may also cover isolated areas of East Madhya Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh till December 29. Similar conditions are likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Bihar, Assam and Meghalaya, other northeastern states including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, as well as Odisha till January 1.

People have been advised to drive slowly, use fog lights and stay alert, especially during early morning travel.

No major change in minimum temperatures in northwest India

On the temperature front, the weather department said there will be no major change in minimum temperatures over northwest India in the next 24 hours.

However, temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the following three days, before dropping by around 2 degrees Celsius later.

Delhi wakes up to cold and cloudy morning

New Delhi experienced a cold and cloudy morning on Monday with the temperature settling at 10 degrees Celsius as of 5 am. High humidity levels at 92 per cent added to the chill in the air. Light winds with gusts reaching up to 15 kmph were reported. Thick cloud cover blanketed the city, leading to reduced visibility of around 5 kilometres, according to the AccuWeather.

For Delhi, the IMD’s Regional Weather Forecasting Centre said the national capital will see mainly clear skies with foggy mornings in the coming days. Day temperatures are expected to remain between 20-23 degrees Celsius, while night temperatures may hover between 6-9 degrees Celsius through early January.
